Steel cut oats
December 11, 2006
Been eating these for breakfast for about a month now. I have lost about 20lbs. They fill me up and I am not hungry for most of the rest of the day. If you hate oatmeal, well try these, they’re completely different in texture. It is almost like eating a porridge-like brown rice with a really nice texture. They are great with some walnuts and some maple syrup. Would be good with whatever it is you like on your oatmeal, syrup, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg etc.
I cook them on the stove with 4-parts water to 1 part oat meal. For me I just cook 1/4 cup, for my wife and I, 1/2 cup. For the whole week I sometimes cook them up ahead of time (2-cups) and store them in the fridge in a plastic container. Then heat them up in the microwave. I have tried cooking them in the microwave, but they boil over and make a mess. So stove top seems to work best.
You can probably get them cheapest from your local bulk-food store, or order from bulkfoods.com. There is a canned variety sold in some specialty grocery stores that is far to expensive, and I have never tried them.comments powered by Disqus
